The “nothing to hide” argument sounds practical until you look at how modern systems actually work. People do not need to be doing something wrong for profiling to hurt them. They only need to be classifiable, inferable, and steerable. Privacy matters because context can be used to shape treatment long before anyone says the word punishment out loud.
Pew’s work helps show how normal this concern has become. Most Americans already think online and mobile activity is heavily tracked, and large majorities say the risks of corporate data collection outweigh the benefits. This is not a fringe civil-liberties complaint. It is a broad recognition that information asymmetry changes how the internet feels.
The same is true in commerce, advertising, and everyday interfaces. A system does not need to expose a secret to exploit a weakness. It can simply infer urgency, pressure tolerance, spending habits, or vulnerability and adjust what it shows in response. That is a privacy problem because it changes the decision environment around a person.
Privacy also matters because data tends to persist and travel. Once information has been collected, it can be resold, leaked, repurposed, or fed into later models. IBM’s 2024 Cost of a Data Breach Report put the global average breach cost at $4.88 million, a sign of how valuable and dangerous exposed data remains inside the modern economy.
The better way to frame privacy is not “what are you hiding?” It is “what should a system be allowed to assume, collect, and act on about you without your meaningful understanding?” That is a much more honest question for the internet we actually live in.
Cloak should lean into that honesty. Privacy is about staying human in systems that increasingly treat people as prediction targets. That is a real value proposition even for people with nothing dramatic to hide.
